Lewis Chapel Life Groups

At Lewis Chapel we encourage groups to meet for 12 weeks in a row, followed by a month off. Months off include December, April, and August as these months coincide with typical busy times or holidays. Let’s be honest, groups need a break too, but we hope that 12 weeks will build strong ties.

Our Life Group system is set up so people can opt out at the end of the 12 weeks. Sometimes, a Life Group simply isn’t a good fit. By limiting the meetings you can opt in at the beginning of a new 12 weeks and try out a new group.

We encourage people to finish out the 12 weeks and not leave a group mid way through.

What To Expect

There are many common questions people have about Life Groups. Below are some answers as to what Life Groups ARE and ARE NOT that might be useful:

Groups of people who meet together regularly to socialize, learn, and grow together.
Relaxing environments where group discussions and conversations are encouraged. Where the conversation is based on Biblical principles and the topics are prepared and led by trained and qualified facilitators.
Places where visitors are welcome with open arms and warm loving hospitality.
Groups of judgmental “super spiritual” church people.
A gathering of super Christians who meet to argue religion and theology while belittling those who they feel are not at their level.
Exclusive clubs where you have to apply for membership.

A Biblical Foundation

In Acts, we see that Life Groups were part of the early Church

And they, continuing daily with one accord in the temple (corporate worship and fellowship), and breaking bread from house to house (small life group ministry), did eat their meat with gladness and singleness of heart, Praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord added to the church daily such as should be saved. (evangelistic blessing and impact). Acts 2:46-47 (NKJV)

There is also biblical support for the purpose of the various types of Life Groups.

For believers wanting to develop spiritual disciplines and go deep.
And they continued steadfastly in the apostles’ doctrine and fellowship, and in breaking of bread, and in prayers.
Acts 2:42 (NKJV)
For believers and non-believers, persons who want to build in-depth relationships with others.
A friend loves at all times, and a brother is born for a time of adversity.
Proverbs 17:17 (NIV)
For believers who are serving alongside one another in ministry. For instance, ushers, musical teams, leadership teams, etc…
The gifts he gave were that some would be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, some pastors, and teachers, 12 to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ, 13 until all of us come to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to maturity, to the measure of the full stature of Christ.
Ephesians 4:11-13 (NRSV)
Groups led by a couple of believers but for non-believers. Groups that spend much time dealing with the issues non-believers are considering before coming to Christ.
But in your hearts revere Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect…
1 Peter 3:15 (NIV)
Groups for believers and non-believers, groups that support attendees through personal difficulties.
Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing.
1 Thessalonians 5:11(NRSV)
Groups for believers and non-believers who come alongside one another to recognize and be released from the lies that Satan has imprinted on their hearts.
My friends, if anyone is detected in a transgression, you who have received the Spirit should restore such a one in a spirit of gentleness. Take care that you yourselves are not tempted. Bear one another’s burdens, and in this way, you will fulfill the law of Christ.
Galatians 6:1-2 (NRSV)
He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.
Psalm 147:3 (NRSV)
